What is vehicle registration (refrendo) in Nuevo León and how to check it

What is vehicle registration (refrendo)

The refrendo is an annual vehicle tax that all vehicle owners registered in Nuevo Leon must pay. This payment is made to the Instituto de Control Vehicular de Nuevo Leon (ICVNL) and is mandatory for legal driving.

When to pay

The registration payment period generally starts in January each year. The deadline depends on the last digits of your plate:

  • Plates ending in 1-2: January-February
  • Plates ending in 3-4: March-April
  • Plates ending in 5-6: May-June
  • Plates ending in 7-8: July-August
  • Plates ending in 9-0: September-October

How to check your registration

With RegioPlacas you can check your registration status in under 3 seconds. You just need to:

  1. Download the app
  2. Enter your plate number
  3. See the result instantly

The lookup is performed directly against the ICVNL databases, so the information is always up to date.

What happens if I don't pay

If you don't pay your registration on time, monthly surcharges accrue. Additionally, driving without current registration can result in fines if you're stopped at a checkpoint.

Tip: enable alerts

With RegioPlacas you can enable automatic notifications that will remind you before your registration expires. Never pay unnecessary surcharges again.
